Woom GO 2 vs. a big-box bike with training wheels

Same age range. Same 14-inch wheels. Completely different first ride. One bike teaches balance. The other postpones it — and weighs almost twice as much.

If you are shopping Target, Walmart, or Amazon for a 14-inch bike with training wheels, you are looking at a steel frame, 20–24 pounds, and a skill your child will have to unlearn. The Woom GO 2 is built the other way: 12.2 lb aluminum, kid-scale geometry, and a clean path from balance bike to real pedaling.

Woom GO 2

$459$413.10

Labor Day price on in-stock bikes only. Special orders are regular price.

  • 12.2 lb — light enough for a 3- or 4-year-old to start, stop, and pick up
  • Designed to skip training wheels after a balance bike
  • 6061 aluminum frame, not steel
  • Low stand-over (13.8″) so they can put both feet down
  • Tiny 80 mm cranks sized for short legs
  • Small-hand brake levers + color-coded rear brake
  • Steering limiter to reduce over-steer crashes
  • Schwalbe tires, sealed bearings, 10-year woom frame/fork warranty path through a real shop
  • Fitted, assembled, and rolled onto Coal Creek Trail from our door
Typical big-box 14″ bike

Training-wheel special

$90–$160

Walmart / Target / Amazon 14-inch steel bikes for ages 3–5.

  • 20–24 lb — often as heavy as the child
  • Training wheels teach the wrong lean for turning
  • High-tensile / carbon-steel frame
  • Higher saddle and longer cranks than a preschooler needs
  • Coaster brake only, or a full-size lever kids can’t reach well
  • No steering limiter
  • Department-store assembly, mixed QC, short support window
  • When the training wheels come off, they start over on balance
  • Harder to sell or trade up when they outgrow it

The real difference is not the basket. It is physics.

A typical 4-year-old weighs 30–40 pounds. Put them on a 24 lb steel bike with training wheels and they are fighting the bike, not learning it. Cut that weight nearly in half — as Woom does — and the same child can start, stop, and put a foot down without an adult holding the saddle.

Training wheels also freeze the bike upright. Kids never practice the lean that keeps a two-wheeler up in a turn. Take the wheels off six months later and you have not “graduated.” You have a heavier bike and a new skill to learn from scratch. Pediatric ride coaches and independent testers have said this for years: teach balance first, then add pedals.

That is the Woom path. GO 1 / GO 1 PLUS for balance. GO 2 for the first pedals. Same lightweight idea the whole way up.

Labor Day price $413.10 in stock (was $459) $90–$160 — cheap until you buy the next bike

Big-box weight range based on current 14-inch Walmart/Target listings (about 20.5–24.2 lb). Woom specs from woom.com.

“But the other bike is $120.”

Fair. The sticker is lower. Count the whole story:

  • A Woom actually gets ridden. Heavy steel bikes get parked after the first wobbly weekend.
  • Kids outgrow 14-inch bikes fast. A Woom holds value and can move through our kids trade-up. A $99 training-wheel bike usually does not.
Labor Day, through September 8, 2026. We matched woom.com: 10% off in-stock Woom bikes. The GO 2 is $413.10 (was $459). Sale price is for bikes we have on the floor or can pull from our warehouse into Erie or Longmont. If we special-order it, it is regular price.

Must-Have Add Ons: add Slime in both tires ($20), then a helmet, bell, POP basket, or gloves. Goatheads do not care that it is a kids’ bike.

Try it here — not in a parking lot

CyclErie is in Historic Old Town Erie, a few steps from Coal Creek Trail, with a second shop on Main Street in Longmont. Bring the kid. We will check inseam, set the bike, and let them pedal on a real path — the same way they will ride at home.

FAQ

Can my child go straight onto a GO 2 with no balance bike?

Some can, if they already balance well. Most 3-year-olds do better on a GO 1 or GO 1 PLUS first. If they can glide on a balance bike, the GO 2 is the clean next step — still without training wheels.

Will you put training wheels on a Woom?

We do not recommend it. It fights the geometry Woom designed. If a child is not ready to pedal, we size a balance bike instead of adding training wheels to the wrong tool.

Is every color on sale?

Labor Day pricing follows woom.com on select in-stock models and colors. Ask us what is on the floor in Erie and Longmont today.

Do you assemble it and fit it?

Yes. That is the point of buying local instead of a box-store crate. We also service Woom bikes after the sale.
