Colorado takes $225 off a new e-bike at the register for any Colorado resident, and income-qualified households can add a state rebate of $1,000 or more. Here is how both programs work in 2026, what has changed, and what local cities offer. CyclErie takes $225 off new e-bikes through the state credit.

The Colorado e-bike tax credit: $225 off at the register

The state pays the shop a tax credit, and the shop passes a discount on to you.

How it works

Good to know

What changed in 2026

If you read about a $450 discount, that was the 2024 and 2025 amount.

  • 2024 (sales from April 1)$450
  • 2025$450
  • 2026$225

Amounts from the Colorado Department of Revenue's table of maximum discounts. (Colorado Dept. of Revenue) The Colorado Energy Office said the reduction came from the state's revenue forecast under the law that created the credit (HB23-1272). (CBS Colorado) That law cuts the credit by 50 percent if state revenue is not expected to grow at least 4 percent. (Legislative fiscal note) Bicycle Colorado also reported the drop to $225 starting in 2026. (Bicycle Colorado)

A bill in the August 2025 special session that would have ended the credit after 2025 was postponed indefinitely and did not pass. (HB25B-1018) The credit remains authorized through tax year 2032. (Colorado Dept. of Revenue) We have not found a published amount for 2027, so check the state pages before you plan a 2027 purchase. (Colorado Dept. of Revenue, Colorado Energy Office)

Who and what qualifies

No income limit and no price limit for the $225 discount.

You

  • You live in Colorado and can show proof of a physical Colorado address at purchase. (Colorado Energy Office)
  • Proof must be dated within three months of the purchase. A current Colorado driver license or ID, a computer-generated bill, a printed bank statement, a lease or mortgage, an insurance policy, vehicle registration and other documents are on the state's list. (Colorado Energy Office)
  • You have not already used the discount this calendar year. (Colorado Energy Office)
  • You sign the state's DR 0514 purchaser affidavit. (DR 0514 form, Colorado Dept. of Revenue)

The e-bike

  • New, not used. (Colorado Energy Office)
  • Certified to UL 2849 or EN 15194. UL-certified bikes carry a UL logo on the bike or battery. (Colorado Energy Office, UL Solutions)
  • Motor of 750 watts or less, not gasoline powered, two or three wheels, and working pedals. (Colorado Energy Office)
  • Class 1, 2 or 3. The state says a bike with a mode that goes past the three classes (sometimes sold as an "off-road" mode) does not count as an e-bike under its definition, as of August 2025. (Colorado Energy Office)
  • No minimum or maximum price. The state warns that low-cost bikes may not meet safety standards. (Colorado Energy Office)

Not sure whether a bike qualifies? Ask us before you buy. Our guide to buying a safe e-bike explains the UL label, and our class and trail guide explains Classes 1, 2 and 3.

How it works at CyclErie

CyclErie takes $225 off new e-bikes through the state credit. Here is the usual path.

  1. Test ride

Book a free test ride at our Erie shop, or call Longmont. Try a few bikes and find your fit.

  2. Fill out the form

Complete the DR 0514 affidavit on our site before you visit, or in the shop. Open the form.

  3. Show proof of address

Bring a Colorado ID or a document with your address dated in the last three months. The shop checks it and gives it back. (DR 0514 form)

  4. See it on your receipt

The $225 shows as a separate line. The state then reimburses us through the retailer credit. (Colorado Dept. of Revenue, Colorado Energy Office)

Behind the scenes, retailers collect each buyer's affidavit and send them to the Department of Revenue with a quarterly report. (Colorado Energy Office)

Local city and county rebates

Checked October 19, 2026. These programs change, so confirm with the city before you buy.

Erie

$100 e-bike rebate

The Town of Erie offers $100 for an e-bike bought between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2026, for Town of Erie utility customers. Class 1 to 3, $5,000 maximum price, no full-suspension mountain bikes. You apply after you buy, and funds are first come, first served. (Town of Erie)

Denver

$675, all claimed for 2026

Denver's 2026 standard rebate is $675 with an income cap, for Denver residents. All 2026 vouchers have been claimed, and a waiting list is open. The city says it can be combined with the state credit. (City of Denver)

Boulder

City program paused

The City of Boulder lists its e-bike incentive program as paused for 2026. Boulder residents can still use the state credit and the state rebate. (City of Boulder, Boulder County)

Longmont

No active rebate

Longmont ran a small demonstration in 2022 and lists no future plans for that program. The city is exploring a broader income-qualified program. (City of Longmont)

Stacking rules: the state says a state rebate cannot be combined with a local city or county e-bike incentive on the same bike. (Colorado Energy Office) The Erie page does not say whether its $100 rebate can be combined with the state rebate or the $225 credit, so ask the Town of Erie at 303-926-2700 before you apply for both. (Town of Erie)

Frequently asked questions

Is the discount still $450?

No. It dropped to $225 for 2026. It was $450 in 2024 and 2025. (Colorado Dept. of Revenue, CBS Colorado)

Is there an income limit on the $225?

No. Any Colorado resident buying a qualifying new e-bike at a participating retailer can use it once per calendar year. Only the separate state rebate has an income test. (Colorado Energy Office, Colorado Energy Office)

Do I file anything on my tax return?

The state describes the credit as going to the retailer, who gives you the discount at the sale. You sign the DR 0514 affidavit at purchase. (Colorado Dept. of Revenue, DR 0514 form) Ask your tax preparer if you have questions about your own return.

Do I pay sales tax on the discounted price?

No. You pay sales tax on the full price before the discount. (Colorado Energy Office)

Can I use it on a used e-bike?

No. The e-bike must be new. (Colorado Energy Office)

Can I buy online and still get it?

The discount is given by a participating retailer at the point of sale, and the retailer must collect your affidavit and check your proof of address. (Colorado Energy Office, DR 0514 form) Ask any online seller whether it participates before you order.

Can I use the credit and the state rebate together?

Yes, at a retailer that takes part in both programs. (Colorado Energy Office, Colorado Energy Office)

Does the bike need a UL label?

It must be certified to UL 2849 or EN 15194. (Colorado Energy Office) See our safe e-bike buying guide and our safety notices before you buy.

Will the amount change in 2027?

It can. The law lets the amount fall if state revenue forecasts are weak. (Legislative fiscal note) We have not found a 2027 amount, so check the state pages. (Colorado Dept. of Revenue)

Can I test ride first?
