E-Bike Battery Care & Charging Safety: A Rider's Guide
A little care goes a long way. These everyday habits help your e-bike battery last longer and lower the risk of fire. Everything here comes from fire-safety agencies and the brands we work with, and your bike's own manual always comes first.
the charging range Aventon, Bosch and NFPA give (NFPA says up to 105°F). Room temperature is best.
storage charge across brands we checked. Bosch says 30 to 60%, Specialized about 60%, Aventon 70 to 80%. Follow your manual.

Everyday charging do's and don'ts
The habits fire-safety agencies and manufacturers agree on.
Do
- Use the charger that came with your bike, or one your bike's maker approves. (CPSC, NFPA, Bosch, Aventon)
- Stay nearby while it charges. CPSC says never charge while you are asleep or away from home. (CPSC)
- Unplug once it is full. Don't leave the battery sitting on the charger. (CPSC, NFPA, Bosch, Aventon)
- Charge on a hard, flat surface, away from exits and anything that can burn. (NFPA, FDNY, Aventon)
- Plug the charger straight into a wall outlet. (FDNY)
- Charge where there is a working smoke alarm. (Bosch, FDNY)
- Let the battery cool down after a ride before charging. Aventon suggests about 30 minutes. (Aventon, Bosch)
- Check the battery and charger for damage before each charge. (Bosch, Aventon)
Don't
- Don't use "universal" chargers unless they are approved for your exact bike. (CPSC)
- Don't use extension cords or power strips. (FDNY)
- Don't charge on beds, couches or other soft surfaces. (NFPA)
- Don't charge below 32°F or above about 104°F. (NFPA, Aventon, Bosch)
- Don't use packs that were modified, rebuilt by unqualified people, or made with used cells. (CPSC)
Indoors or outside? Sources differ. NFPA suggests charging large items like e-bikes outside when possible, while Aventon recommends charging indoors in a cool, dry, ventilated spot. (NFPA, Aventon) Follow your bike's manual, and wherever you charge, keep it on a hard surface, away from exits and things that burn, and stay nearby.
Colorado seasons
Front Range riding means cold mornings, hot afternoons and long winters. Here is how the brands handle it.
Start with a warm battery
Below freezing, Bosch and Specialized both recommend keeping the battery at room temperature and putting it on the bike right before you ride. (Bosch, Specialized) Cold batteries give less range and may cut motor power. (Bosch, Specialized) Charge at room temperature, not in a freezing garage.
Skip the hot car and direct sun
Don't store the battery in direct sunlight or inside a hot vehicle. Park in the shade or a cool spot when you can. (NFPA, Bosch, Specialized)
Long-term storage
For more than a few weeks off the bike. Brands give different numbers, so follow your manual.
What everyone agrees on
- Remove the battery from the bike and take it off the charger. (Aventon, Bosch)
- Never store it completely empty. (Aventon, Bosch)
- Keep it dry, cool and out of temperature extremes. (NFPA, Aventon, Bosch, Specialized)
- Store it away from exits and anything that can burn, ideally where there is a smoke alarm. (NFPA, Bosch)
Where the brands differ
- Bosch: 30 to 60% charge, room temperature (10 to 20°C / 50 to 68°F ideal), check after six months. (Bosch, Bosch)
- Specialized: about 60%, around 41 to 59°F, top up every three months. For breaks up to 4 weeks, the Specialized app's 80% Charge Limit. (Specialized)
- Aventon: 75 to 80% (another Aventon article says 70 to 75%), climate-controlled, check monthly. (Aventon, Aventon)
The right charger, and why certification matters
Cheap parts are a common thread in battery fires.
Chargers and replacement batteries
- CPSC received 156 reports of fire and thermal incidents involving "universal" micromobility chargers between January 2023 and May 2024. A charger can fit and still be incompatible. (CPSC)
- Only use a replacement battery that your bike's maker confirms is suitable for your bike. (CPSC)
- Cheap or off-brand chargers may not meet important safety standards. (NFPA)
What to look for
- Buy bikes, batteries and chargers listed by a nationally recognized testing lab, such as UL, ETL or CSA. (NFPA, NFPA)
- UL 2849 is the Standard for Electrical Systems for eBikes. It covers the e-bike's electrical drive train, battery and charger systems. (NFPA, UL Solutions)
- You may also see UL 2271 on batteries. Ask us if you are unsure what a label means.
Warning signs: stop using the battery
If you notice any of these, stop using and charging it.
- Swelling or a change in shape (NFPA, NFPA)
- Feels very hot (NFPA)
- Strange smell or change in color (NFPA)
- Smoke, sparks, leaking (NFPA, Aventon)
- Popping or hissing sounds (NFPA)
- Cracks or other physical damage (Aventon)
- Water got inside, or it won't hold a charge (NFPA)
If it is safe to do so, NFPA suggests moving the device away from anything that can catch fire. (NFPA) Then contact the bike's maker or bring it to a qualified shop. Please call us before bringing in a battery that shows these signs.
If a battery overheats or catches fire
Lithium-ion fires burn very hot and give off toxic gases. (NFPA)
-
Get out
Leave the building immediately. FDNY also says close the door behind you.
-
Call 911
Call from outside.
-
Don't fight it
Don't try to put out a battery fire yourself.

Transport
Car racks and road trips.
Recycling and disposal
Never put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or curbside recycling. (CPSC)
Take worn-out batteries to a battery recycler or household hazardous waste site. If your battery is under a recall or stop-use warning, follow CPSC's instructions for that notice. (CPSC)
